On a recommendation from a class mate I have been looking at the work of Roy Andersson, a Swedish film director. I have mostly been watching his short films and commercial work. I was recommended it because his films are more like a series of short sketches put together. His commercial work is very funny.
But what stands out is that in most scenes, the 'main character' is always being watched by someone in the background. It's not that these characters don't fit into the scene, it's just that they are very obviously looking at the character.
This, in the case of 'Something Happened' (1987) in one of the opening scenes, the character who has just discovered he has AIDs is on a bus and a man sitting behind him is just looking at him, making the character very nervous. I think in the case of this scene it is because the character is very aware he has AIDs. But in other shots, these characters are just there, often they do not interact with the scene in anyway.
I am a fan of the comedy of them though, they are slow moving, but very funny and very abstract.

What I like about the people in the background is that online, it's exactly the same. We do not have online privacy, especially in regards to social networking, everyone on Facebook can see what you are doing all the time.
What Andersson might be suggesting is that these characters who are watching, represent the idea that these 'main' characters are afraid of not being watched, of being alone. By having these background characters seem to be watching what's happening, they reinforce that the main characters exist, that they matter.
It's been said about Twitter and Facebook, this constant updating with Tweets and Status updates, people don't care, no one needs to know this information, but it reminds the user that they exist because if they didn't remind the world they were there, they would feel alone and might stop existing completely.
A collection of commercials by Roy Andersson.

Just a very quick test film looking at those profile pictures when someone in the background makes a stupid face and how we can bring this into the real world.

I like how awkward and strange it is. But I'm not sure if this is the best way to visualize this idea.

'2 pedophiles meet'
  • 2 men talking with children's voices....??
'Wild Poke Attack'
  • A number of situations interrupted by someone running in shouting POKE in a ridiculous manner
  • business meeting
  • making dinner
  • riding a bike

I HATE the word "frape" and don't want to use it in my film in any way. But I did some research and found this example where a boy's status is changed to say he has herpes. What I especially liked about this status was that the last girl he had slept with believed it and responded quite angrily.

I want to have the man animated in a sort of Regina Spektor's 'Us' video kinda way, where his mouth will make the shapes of the words but it's done in stop motion, then back to live action.

I've been wanting to play with using other people's voices over someone speaking to represent their status being hacked. I remembered these adverts from the UK Home Office warning against online predators. You get quite a strange feeling from this video because the voices are so contrasted.

Again looking at pop up ads for porn websites. I'm not sure how to finish this sketch because i'd like to make it quite dark but i don't know if I can/if it will be well received.

Facebook is very clever and works out what you are currently talking about/listening to/interested in and advertises specifically for your taste. I thought about how this might work in real life and came up with a few ideas. These needed working on agan but these are the first drafts. I'm getting together with a film student next week so hopefully we can go through them together and work out the specifics.

So I've been writing a lot of scripts so that they are ready to be tested and filmed ASAP. I have made a few changed to 'Pizza & Sex' and completely re-written 'Window Shopping'. I feel that currently these are the two stand out parts of my project.
I've put the into camera work to rest for a month or so because I feel getting these parts done is more important and will take longer than the post production work.

Jamie Laughlin and Naomi Bajina (Brighton uni) act out Pizza and Sex for a first test. I am really happy with this film, I love how cocky Jamie is, his grin, the way he chews gum and is totally self obsessed, and I love how Mia umm's and comes up with multiple excuses to leave the conversation.

I unfortnatly shot this on a 7mpxl camera so need to re-shoot it on a HD camera. I'm also going to have to use a microphone to get better sound quality.

I also want to add more Facebook references, though not entirely obvious ones.
In the case of this film, when Jamie says "Yeah I bet it was" I want another character to come over, High-5 him and say "LIKE".
I also want Mia to have more excuses such as "My Dad needs the computer" and "I already have a boyfriend" as many as possible.

I am however very pleased with this test and really need to get more on the go.
