The spy screen has failed, although I'm not sure why. I took the screen apart and cut out the anti-glare and the polarised layers. They came as one piece which i thought was going to be a problem but simply by putting tape on the anti glare they work.
However I must have damaged the screen whilst taking it apart.  I found it quite difficult to do, especially removing the glue with white spirit after I'd taken the glare off. i'm worried that I may not have had to do this and that's what has caused the screen to break. Or a wire has come loose somewhere so I'll take it apart again and have another look though i have looked several times and still have had no luck.

Download the One Stop Data Mosh Kit from:
Make sure all your files are the same size, there is a program for converting your files in the kit with some presets which i have been using. Importantly this changes the number of keyframes to 99999 automatically so that you can capture the movement frames. It also changes the bitrate to 20000 kbit/s.
Once you've encoded your files, you need to start editing them in AVIdemux. Start by opening your first file, and then Appending the file you want to come after to it.

'how to datamosh' video by DataMosher, one of the guys who worked on the Chairlift video.
Evident utensil by Chairlift - this video brought datamoshing to the pop culture.

I get really into data Moshing and just kept on creating new variations with different cuts and effects created by looping frames and removing Image Frames.
Here is the final cut of Jamie's data-Moshed rant, with about 15 seconds of staring before hand, I've also included the same starring loop after but datamoshed it. This may change and just go back to the regular video so that it can loop.
I have also included some other tests which were just for fun and to get a bit of an idea of what i was actually doing. I love it when i get the loops right so faces spin and rainbows explode out of people in such a horrific way. I think what i really like about this effect is that we live in a digital age where everything is perfect, exact, timed and planned, and then we have this technique which is still starting to be played with and fully visualised which goes against that rule of perfection and control completely shattering what we've created.

playing with Jamie's rant at random, I cut up the video and exported each sentence, then had a play with some datamosh software, removing some I-frames and this was the result. In comparison to the previous rant video, this is a lot faster and a lot more interesting visually.
After discussing the previous one with my tutor we agreed to try and make it more like the distortion that occurs when your are having a webcam conference rather than a TV hack. This being said I thought I'd take it to the extreme and completely f*** around with the image, causing the viewer, this 'voyeuristic pervert' to really have to pay attention to the person on the screen.

I have had to cut the script I was using for the 2 screen conversation down to 3 very short pieces, which i do not believe will work with the sound quality being as poor as it is and before I can show it, everything would have to be re-shot and edited.
Below are the videos are they would appear on the screens - screen 1 and screen 2. I think that if the audio had been ok the project would be longer. I still need to add subtitles to this piece which i think will give it a certain something, it's a shame about the audio but on 2 screens i don't think people will notice too badly as they will be trying to understand the text and the voices.

My housemate worked on some sound FX for me, we tried it with an echo over the voice but it sounded too weird and loud, so we cut it to just a lot of fuzz when Jame speaks, you can still here him but it is far more invasive than him just speaking.
Video with echo ^^^^
I have had a lot of trouble with my pother sounds.  used a RODE NTG-2 microphone with a Cannon X5 D600 camera and the sound quality was awful, even in a closed studio it picked up all the background noise it could (even what sounds like a breeze which is impossible) so the actress is practically inaudible. This has ruined the part of my installation where two screens each have a face on and speak to each other, as now you cannot really hear them properly.
I cut them together all the same but honestly think they will need to be completely re-shot. This is also due to one actress cancelling on me the day of shooting, meaning we had to get another who's first language was not english. She also had to film alone which meant timing was difficult to work out.
I can however put her looking down to read from the page to the fact that, when we use computers to talk, even with webcams, we don't look at eachother, rather we look down at the keyboard to talk. This added something to my film that I had not previously considered.

Due to lack of time, it's been difficult for actors to learn the scripts off by heart, which is what i wanted, for everything to be done in one well times take. So Jamie had to look down and read the script a lot and do it in several takes. What I've done is layered these over video of him just staring into the camera looking bored, interrupting the viewers voyeurism, braking the 4th wall and directly asking the viewer why they are watching him.
I added a fractal noise effect in AE to create static like television interrupting a broadcast. I did this by importing the video into AE then adding a Fractal Noise layer on top. I edited the contrast, stretched it wide (9000pxl) and changed the time equation in evolution so that it is animated over the whole video. Then I've changed the fractal type to DYNAMIC and the Noise to BLOCK making it more computerized and square.

So I wrote a short monologue for one of the characters to say into the camera whilst being watched by the viewer.

*While looking at the audience...

What? What are you looking at? What? Why are you watching me? Are you stalking me? That's sick! What are you doing? What are you waiting for? I'm not going to do anything... I'm just sitting here... watching you, watching me, watching you watching me watching you watching me... watching YOU!
Yeah, that's right, I know all about you, your friends, yopur family, your favourite books, hobbies, and i follow your ups and downs... I know how you feel on a daily basis. You tell me this quite happily, you want me to know your intimate thoughts, like, you're so important... nice holiday pics by the way... and hows your Starbucks? Yeah I know where you are, who you're with, what you're doing... and yet here you are, broadcasting your bleak life that you so proudly present to the world like it matters... like you matter... here you are, watching me, watching you, peeking into my life like some voyeuristic pervert, not satisfied with your own meagre existance. What are you doing? Comparing yourself to me? Feeling connected to me? Do you honestly feel like you know me?
You don't even talk to me, you just... watch... what are you waiting for me to do exactly? Do you even know...? Why are you watching me? Why? JUST FUCK OFF YEAH... Fuck off...and go and live your life, a life, any life! So I can sit here and watch you, still watching me, watching you...

So here I copied the 9 and put them 4 times in a composition. I don't like how many repeats there are but I do like the overall effect.
Here I tried to produce 4 different compositions of 9 and put them together to create one larger video, this works much better due to the randomness of it and the less repeated squares.
